Automated Ultrasonic Inspection

Complex structural parts in the aerospace industry needs to be produced under highest safety criteria. International standards have been established which are defining the best individual inspection method for these components. Ultrasonic Inspection is the most common application, to look through and into the specimen without the need of destroying it. That’s why we are talking about NDT – Non-Destructive Testing. Mainly components made from CFRP (Carbon fiber reinforced polymer) are inspected using Ultrasound.

In the role as integrator Fill is cooperating with company Force from Denmark, providing state of the art UT electronics deeply integrated in the FILL STUDIO control environment.

The concept

Following our Multi-modality Approach – the integration of the FORCE PSP-5 UT device is one of several available applications for NDT in the Aerospace sector. The electronics provides eight high dynamic channels in the base version. This allows either performing Pulse Echo inspection (PE) with each single channel, or Through Transmission inspection (TTU) by combining of at least two of them.

High performance single- or dual-crystal transducers from our partner Rosen are used in our systems. Their unique performance has been proven in several industrial applications.

For highest throughput Phased Array (PA) Pulse Echo or Through Transmission technology with up to 128 Element probes is also available. It starts with the basic electronics with 64 elements and can also be supplied in a version with 128 and 256 channels.

Our partner Imasonic is providing customized phased array transducers, to cope with the stringent requirements of the aerospace industry.

The UT data can be processed further with any evaluation tool, as the 3D format is not proprietary and fully accessible. Anyhow our selected partner for the evaluation is TESTIA, with its software "NDTKit UT" formerly known as “ULTIS”.

All EOAT (End Of Arm Tools), carrying the transducers can be fully automatically exchanged by the FLEXCHANGE tool changer.

The rigid and compact case is fan-less and needs no dedicated Air Conditioning.

The annual calibration can be provided as a Service, either on site or providing a rental device.

Features

  • High usable dynamic range in once cycle

  • Full 3D data acquisition of the entire A-Scan in Pulse Echo inspection or maximum amplitude in TTU

  • Burst Pulser for highly attenuative materials (e.g., thick sandwich spoilers)

  • High ADC rate up to 120 MHz

  • 32bit data collection for highest resolution

  • Dual Frequency inspection (e.g., 1MHz for Nomex and 5MHz for monolithic areas simultaneously)

  • Acquisition data fully compatible to TESTIA NDTKit UT (*.NK3)

  • Huge variety of specific EOAT (End Of Arm Tools) is available
