Intelligent tools and electronic eyes for industrial wood re-touching
The speedfiller from Fill and ColourBrain from Baumer enable fully-automatic and efficient wood re-touching for improved cost-effectiveness and resource efficiency.
With the "speedfiller" high-performance spot repair machine, wood surfaces can be touched up completely automatically and with consistent quality for the very first time. Alongside cost advantages, the automated production process provides above all an appreciable improvement in working conditions. Manual re-touching of wood surfaces was previously considered unattractive and unhealthy due to excessive dust formation and the high frequency of production line cycles.
Gurten, July 26, 2010 – The fully automatic re-touching of wood surfaces (parquet, multilayer boards, plywood) is a very young technology that has previously only been utilized in isolated cases. Fill has been developing and manufacturing machines and systems for the solid timber industry for more than 40 years. Baumer Inspection GmbH, based in Constance, has been developing optical inspection systems for 30 years and is a global leader in the field of automatic inspection for the furniture and flooring industry. With the development of the speedfiller spot repair systems in combination with "multi-sensorial" ColourBrain scanners, the Austrian machine experts and the Constance-based image processors have carried out groundbreaking work. The benefit for users lies in reduced production costs and the consistent high quality of the re-touching process. Moreover, working conditions have been improved significantly compared with manual re-touching. No problems due to poor posture, no noise, no stress.
Improvement in quality and conservation of resources
In addition to spot repair work on the wood surface, the speedfiller from Fill and scanner technology from Baumer can also be used to undertake a so-called "upgrading" of the surface. For example, wood and boards can be upgraded by professional machining with the speedfiller from quality B to quality A.
Fill has been cooperating with the German inspection system specialists, Baumer Inspection GmbH, since April 2009. Baumer has been developing and manufacturing automatic inspection systems for the detection of defects for 30 years and occupies a leading market position in the field of scanner technology. The combination of Baumer scanner technology with the “speedfiller” high-performance spot repair system from Fill allows defects to be removed economically by means of natural knot dowels, round wood patches, resin patches, or lute – all maintaining consistent board surface quality. In so doing, defects are transferred directly from the scanner to the spot repair unit controller via a CAM interface. CNC processing units ensure precise positioning of the units. The spot repair units are fed automatically with different materials in accordance with individual customer requirements.
