First company fire brigade in the Ried district enters into service
The Fill Gurten Fire Brigade will be ensuring even greater safety at machine builder Fill from February 2019 onwards.
Internationally successful machine engineering company Fill is on course for growth. The excellent order situation has called for successive expansion of the production areas at the company site in Gurten. Reorganization of the warehouse logistics has brought numerous changes to the fire safety regulations. Instead of investing in fully automated extinguishing systems, the company decided to found its own fire brigade, the BTF Fill Gurten. The team of 26 fire fighters will be ready for action in mid February.
Gurten, 24 January 2019 – "We are mainly responsible for smaller incidents, such as incipient fires and fire alarms. In the event of larger fires, we will also call on the services of the Gurten voluntary fire brigade and fire departments in the surrounding area," outlines Gerald Berrer, Commander of the Fill Fire Brigade. Instead of investing lots of money in fully automated sprinkler systems, the company has decided to found its own fire brigade. The last time a company fire brigade was brought into being in Upper Austria was in 1999 at the Provincial Theater in Linz. Fill is the only company in the Ried district with its own fire protection unit.
Many fire fighters work for the company
Out of some 850 Fill employees in Gurten, 128 are active members of a voluntary fire service in their spare time. 98 of these employees registered for the company fire brigade. Of these, 26 people were ultimately selected, with a key criterion being their continuous presence at the company site.
Fill manufactures systems for the widest variety of industrial sectors. These systems are tested in live operation at the company site in Gurten, with some of the machines and materials posing an elevated fire risk (e.g., wood processing machines, plastic granules, liquid aluminum, or electronics and batteries) Since October 2018, this has resulted in four smaller fire brigade operations at the company.
Safety is a main priority
Alongside its core task of extinguishing fires, the new company fire brigade at Fill is also equipped to deal with disasters. The company has been hit by flood damage several times in recent years. The "Fill Fire Fighters", as they are known unofficially, consist of 26 members. Nine of them are always present during core working hours; six members are on stand-by at the company outside these hours until 21:00. The in-house unit is well equipped with a modern BMW i3 emergency vehicle and professional equipment. "We are very pleased that our decision to create our own company fire brigade has met with the unanimous approval and support of all employees. All members have a wealth of experience in this field. In the shape of Gerald Berrer, we succeeded in recruiting a longstanding employee and proven firefighting expert as commander. Our priority is the greatest possible safety of our employees and buildings," emphasize Fill´s CEOs Andreas Fill and Wolfgang Rathner in unison.
