Of sparkling stars, shining eyes, and quiet moments.
Advent at Fill is a special time. When thousands of lights illuminate the darkness, traditions are upheld - and appreciation is paramount. It is a time of quiet moments when the spirit of togetherness can be felt.
Every year at the end of November, the Fill headquarters in Gurten is transformed into a sea of lights. In the chestnut garden, 33 Herrnhut stars create a contemplative atmosphere, and the large, festively lit Christmas tree in front of the main entrance becomes the secret landmark of the small community for several weeks.
The giant sequoia tree, which senior manager Marianne Fill had planted over fifty years ago, now towers almost thirty meters into the sky. Decorated with around 11,000 LED lights, it is visible far beyond Gurten and lights up the eyes of numerous visitors from near and far.
When the Christmas lights shine for the first time of the year, there is a palpable magic in the air. The Fill team, many accompanied by their families, gather in the chestnut garden in the late afternoon. With hot chestnuts and punch, everyone immerses themselves in the pre-Christmas atmosphere. Children run around in wonder, conversations arise, laughter mingles with the music.
Sustainability also plays a role in this tradition: thanks to modern LED technology, energy consumption remains low – but the magic remains unbroken. The switch-on ceremony is a conscious pause, a prelude to a quieter time and a bright foretaste of Advent.
