Efficient recycling of battery systems

The "BattBox" research project headed by Fill aims to enhance the value chain of e-car batteries through recycling.

A consortium consisting of Fill, Graz University of Technology, AVL and the Automotive Cluster is developing solutions for the cost-efficient recycling of battery systems. The "BattBox" research project aims to develop multi-stage recycling concepts. Due to the lack of standardization in chemistry, design and dismantling, the goal of the project partners is to develop a broad spectrum of possible processes. At each process stage, the exposed components will be diagnosed and dismantled and then examined for economic and safety-critical aspects. This structured approach is intended to develop processes for the extraction of high-quality and pure-grade raw materials with the best possible recyclability.

Gurten, 6 December 2023 – The "BattBox" project is taking important steps to exploit the dormant and untapped potential for increasing the sustainability of electromobility. An interdisciplinary consortium consisting of Graz University of Technology, AVL and the Upper Austrian Automotive Cluster, led by Fill's mechanical engineering experts, is researching the possibilities and offering solutions for the efficient recycling of e-mobility batteries. "No e-vehicle battery is too difficult for us. The more complex the batteries under investigation, the more exciting and far-reaching the results of the project will be," says Josef Ecker, Project Manager at Fill, confidently.

The cycle of raw materials
Everyone involved in the project agrees that the battery cycle project is as broad as it is detailed, and will lay the foundation for efficient recycling of e-mobility batteries. "BattBox" project represents a strategic milestone for Fill, signifying its active foray into the battery side of electric mobility. This initiative is expected to yield extensive insights and expertise in the management and handling of battery systems. Until now the activities in the area of batteries for e-mobility were mainly focused on the energy storage production sector, but with the "BattBox" project, the available expertise is being extended to the entire battery life cycle. This will make an important contribution to the sustainable reuse and recycling of batteries. The “BattBox” project has been recognized by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG) as being particularly pioneering and has received funding of 1.4 million euros towards the total project volume of approx. 2 million euros.
